Bees Head Coach Doug Sheppard has moved to complete his import “dynamic duo” by capturing the services of Tomas Karpov. The 29 year old first came to the UK in 2012/13 signed to the Telford Tigers and went on to play five solid seasons with Basingstoke Bison.
Learning his hockey in the Czech Republic Tomas played international hockey at both Under 17 and Under 18 age group. In 2005/06 he scored 2+1 in 5 appearances for Czech Republic Under 17 and the following season, having made his senior debut with HC Berounsti Medvedi he recorded 3 assists and a +/- of +3 for Czech Republic Under 18.
A spell in Canada followed with 2007/08 and 2008/09 being spent with Moose Jaw Warriors before a year with Calgary Hitmen.
Tomas returned to the Czech Republic for three seasons and started 2012/13 in Czech 2 before being signed mid-season to Telford Tigers in the EPIHL. In just 23 league appearances he posted 14+24.
In 2013/14 he signed with Doug Sheppard in Basingstoke starting a five year spell with the Hampshire club. In his first season he scored 37+39 from 54 games and picked up a Cup and Play-off double as well as earning himself selection EPIHL All-Star first team.
His second season saw 46 points come from 40 games and the following year, 2015/16 he netted 34, assisting another 30 and helped the Bison to the EPIHL title. He again was selected to the EPIHL All-Star first team.
In 2016/17, in an injury hit season, he still posted 20+28 in the what turned out to be the final season of the EPL but he returned to the Hampshire club for their inaugural NIHL season posting over 75 points from just 38 games helping the Bison complete a treble of League, Southern and National Play-offs.
On securing Tomas’ services Doug Sheppard said; “I’m very pleased Tomas will be joining the Bees next season, he really is the complete package. He’s a quiet leader that plays the game the right way. Tomas has exceptional speed and is highly skilled. He plays a gritty game at both ends of the ice.”
He added; “Tomas is the type of player and person you want to build your organisation around.”
Having agreed terms Tomas added; “I would like to say hi to all the Bees fans. I am already looking forward to be seeing you all and my new team at the beginning of the season. This is a new chapter of my life and I am very excited to see what this opportunity will bring.”
Tomas is 5’10 and weighs 183lbs. He shoots left handed. All three of his 2018/19 jerseys will be available for Own and Loan with the draw for all Own and Loan jerseys being done at Honies on Monday July 9th at the Bees season ticket evening.
