The Sheriff returns

  • Bees Leading scorer returns
  • 53 points in 38 league games last season
  • 10 points in 7 play-off games

Head Coach of the Berkshire Cycles Bracknell Bees Doug Sheppard is delighted to announce that he has retained the services of Roman Malinik who will again wear the Black, White and Gold of the Bees in 19/20.

The 29 year old was a banker for the Bees last season equally comfortable or play making and racked up minutes even strength, penalty killing and on the powerplay.

His first season with the Bees saw him quickly establish himself as a fans’ favourite with his huge work ethic and prodigious scoring winning favour from all corners of the Hive. Previously, in the UK, Roman had represented Basingstoke Bison in the NIHL and Manchester Phoenix in the EPL.

The Czech learned his trade at HC Vitkovice. He first played international hockey in 2005/06 scoring 2+2 in 6 appearances with Czech u16s. He showed his future points scoring potential racking up 49 points in 2006/07 and also gained recognition from his senior club HC Vitkovice with 3 call ups. He also posted 10+3 in 12 games for Czech Republic Under 17s.

121 appearances across two seasons for Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the Québec Major Junior Hockey League started in 2007/08, also gaining him a call up to the Czech Republic Under 20s in his second season abroad.

Roman returned to the Czech Republic to complete his junior hockey and, after topping out on age grounds, Roman signed for HC Dukla Jihlava and in 2014/15 his leadership skills were recognised with the award of the “C” for HC Havlickuv Brod.

A tough season followed for Roman with his first trip to the UK being curtailed by the premature exit from competition of the Manchester Phoenix but nonetheless, he posted over a point a game in his short spell. His time in Manchester brought him to the attention of Doug Sheppard who signed him to his Bison team in 2017/18 where he posted strong numbers making him an obvious choice for the Sheppard’s first Bees squad and creating an easy decision to retain his services for the new challenges this season.

Returning to the Bees Roman Malinik said; “I am happy to be back with Bees again. I enjoyed my first season in Bracknell and I’m looking forward to help bring success next season.”

Head Coach Doug Sheppard talked of his first summer signing; “Roman is the type of player and person we had to return as we look to start building a winning team. With the Bees moving to the National League, there won’t be any nights off next season. Roman turns up every night with a high compete level.

Roman stands at 5’11 and weighs 205lbs.
