Defence gets stronger

The 19/20 Berkshire Cycles Bracknell Bees squad gains another member with Doug Sheppard completing a deal that brings Brendan Baird back to the Hive for another year.

The 23 year old defenceman was a summer signing last year for Doug Sheppard’s first season in charge at the Bees and despite his young years brought with him a huge wealth of experience.

Originally a Bracknell junior he made his Hornets debut in 2012/13 while completing his penultimate season of Under 18s. The following year, his final at Under 18, he also played 19 Hornets games plus made his debut for the Bees, scoring 2+1 in 10 EPIHL appearances.

For 2014/15 he left the Hive and headed down the M3 where he played a season for the Basingstoke Bison ahead of a complete season for the Wightlink Raiders and four appearances in 16/17 before the club withdrew from competition after losing their home rink. He completed that season with Oxford putting up 17 points in 21 games.

In 2017/18 he was back with his Wightlink coach, Jeremy Cornish, when he signed for Streatham IHC, racking up 52 PiMs in exchange for 11 points with his points return year on year proving his capabilities as an offensively minded defenceman.

Last season, his first back at the Bees, he recorded 5+11 in the regular season, together with 2 assists in his 7 play-off games.

Head Coach Doug Sheppard spoke of his latest signing; “Brendan is as competitive as anyone I’ve coached, he has a great attitude and demands intensity in training from his teammates. Brendan is always a pain for opposing players and showed signs of being an offensive Dman last season.

Brendan Baird stands 5’9”, weighs 181lbs and shoots right handed.
